Mitmetuumalõlitus

Mitmetuumalõlitus refers to a condition affecting the white matter of the brain, characterized by the presence of multiple lesions or areas of damage. These lesions are typically identified through neuroimaging techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The term literally translates from Estonian as "multi-core inflammation" or "multi-center inflammation," hinting at the scattered nature of the affected areas.

The underlying causes of mitmetuumalõlitus can vary widely. It is often associated with demyelinating diseases, where the myelin sheath, the protective covering around nerve fibers, is damaged. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a prominent example of a condition that can manifest as mitmetuumalõlitus. Other potential causes include inflammatory processes, vascular issues affecting the small blood vessels in the brain, and certain infections.

Symptoms of mitmetuumalõlitus depend heavily on the location and extent of the lesions. They can include a broad range of neurological deficits such as changes in sensation (numbness, tingling), motor impairments (weakness, coordination problems), visual disturbances, cognitive difficulties, and fatigue. The progression and severity of symptoms can differ significantly from person to person. Diagnosis involves a combination of clinical evaluation, neurological examination, and advanced imaging. Treatment strategies are aimed at managing the underlying cause, alleviating symptoms, and improving quality of life.
