Mitmeparteisust, also known as multi-party system, is a form of government in which political power is distributed among several political parties. The number of parties in a multi-party system can vary significantly, but generally, it implies that at least three or more parties have a realistic chance of participating in government or holding significant political influence. This can foster a more diverse representation of societal interests and viewpoints within the political landscape. However, it can also lead to political instability if coalition partners have vastly different ideologies or if forming and maintaining a stable government proves difficult.

Proportional representation, where seats are allocated based on the proportion of votes received, tends to encourage the existence of multiple parties. Conversely, first-past-the-post systems often favor larger parties, potentially leading to a more concentrated party system. Countries like Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands are often cited as examples of nations with robust multi-party systems.
