Mitmeastmelise

Mitmeastmelise is an Estonian adjective meaning multistage. It is used to describe devices or processes composed of two or more successive stages. In technical contexts, mitmeastmelised systems are designed so that each stage performs a portion of the overall task and is discarded or reconfigured after completion.

In rocketry, a multistage rocket employs separate propulsion units for different phases of flight. After a stage’s propellant is spent, that stage is detached to reduce mass and allow the remaining stages to accelerate the vehicle further. This approach increases the effective delta-v and payload capacity compared with a single-stage design. Staging can be sequential (stages burn one after another) or, in some configurations, involve boosters that operate in parallel before jettison.
