Mitbestimmungssystemen, often translated as co-determination or participation systems, are frameworks that grant employees a voice in the decision-making processes of their employing companies. These systems are prevalent in several European countries, most notably Germany, and aim to balance the power between capital and labor. The core principle is that employees, through their representatives, should have influence over matters affecting their work, working conditions, and the strategic direction of the enterprise.
The specific forms of Mitbestimmung vary. One common model involves employee representation on supervisory boards, where
