Mischungsrechnung, often translated as mixture problems or alligation, is a mathematical concept used to determine the proportions of different components needed to achieve a desired mixture. It is commonly applied in fields such as chemistry, pharmacy, and economics. The core principle involves setting up equations that relate the quantities and characteristics of the individual components to the desired properties of the final mixture.

For instance, in chemistry, it might be used to calculate the amount of a stronger solution and a weaker solution required to create a solution of intermediate concentration. In pharmacy, it can help determine the correct ratios of active ingredients and inert fillers for medications. Economically, it might be used to find the optimal blend of different raw materials to minimize costs while meeting quality standards.

The calculations typically involve setting up a system of linear equations. One equation usually represents the total quantity of the mixture, while another represents a specific property, such as concentration, price, or mass, of the components. Solving these equations yields the unknown quantities of each component. There are graphical methods, like the chessboard method (or alligation alternate), that can simplify the process for specific types of problems, particularly those involving percentages or concentrations.
