Misadaptation
Misadaptation refers to a trait that, while possibly advantageous in the past or in a specific environment, is no longer beneficial or may even be detrimental in the current circumstances. This concept is often discussed in the context of evolutionary biology and psychology, where it highlights that evolutionary processes do not necessarily lead to perfect or optimal solutions for every situation. A misadaptation can arise when an environment changes more rapidly than the rate at which natural selection can act on a population, leaving existing traits to become maladaptive.
For example, a physiological response that was crucial for survival in a low-resource ancestral environment might
