Minkowskian
Minkowskian refers to anything related to Hermann Minkowski, a German mathematician and physicist. Most commonly, it is used in the context of Minkowski spacetime, a four-dimensional mathematical construct that merges three dimensions of space with one dimension of time. This spacetime is the arena for Einstein's theory of special relativity. In Minkowski spacetime, the interval between two events, which is a combination of spatial and temporal distances, is invariant under Lorentz transformations. This invariance is a fundamental principle of special relativity. The geometry of Minkowski spacetime is non-Euclidean, characterized by a metric that differs from the standard Euclidean metric. The term Minkowskian can also be used more broadly to describe mathematical or physical concepts that are based on or derived from Minkowski's work, particularly his contributions to geometry and the relativistic formulation of physics. His insights fundamentally changed the way physicists and mathematicians understand space, time, and their relationship.
