Mimomys
Mimomys is an extinct genus of arvicoline rodent that lived during the Pliocene and Pleistocene epochs. These small mammals were widespread across Eurasia and North Africa. Fossil evidence suggests that Mimomys was a herbivore, with its diet likely consisting of grasses and other plant material. Its dental morphology, particularly the cusps on its molars, is a key characteristic used by paleontologists to identify and classify species within the genus. Mimomys species varied in size, but generally resembled modern voles. The genus is considered a significant part of the fossil record for understanding rodent evolution and paleoecology during the Cenozoic era. Some species of Mimomys are believed to be ancestral to later arvicoline rodents, including some modern vole lineages. The extinction of Mimomys is attributed to various environmental changes that occurred during the late Pleistocene.
