Mikrovasculárním refers to the smallest blood vessels in the body. These include capillaries, which are so narrow that red blood cells can only pass through them in single file, and precapillary arterioles and postcapillary venules. The primary function of the microvasculature is to facilitate the exchange of gases, nutrients, and waste products between the blood and the surrounding tissues.

Capillaries are the site of this vital exchange. Their thin walls, typically only one cell thick, allow for efficient diffusion. Arterioles leading to capillaries regulate blood flow into these tiny vessels by constricting or dilating. Similarly, venules collect blood from capillaries and lead it towards larger veins.

Disruptions in the microvasculature can have significant health consequences. Conditions such as diabetes can damage capillaries, leading to microvascular complications like retinopathy (affecting the eyes) and nephropathy (affecting the kidneys). Inflammation and changes in blood flow within the microvasculature are also implicated in various diseases, including cardiovascular disorders and neurological conditions. Research into the microvasculature is crucial for understanding and treating a wide range of medical issues.
