Mikrotechnik

Mikrotechnik, or microtechnology, is a field of engineering focused on devices, systems and processes with characteristic dimensions in the micrometer to millimeter range. It integrates mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, materials science and chemistry to create miniaturized components and systems such as MEMS, microfluidic devices, micro-optical systems and sensor technologies.

Historically, Mikrotechnik emerged from advances in silicon microfabrication and MEMS in the 1980s and 1990s, driven by the semiconductor and consumer electronics industries. Key processes include microfabrication techniques such as photolithography, etching, deposition (chemical and physical vapor deposition), and micromachining, enabling batch production on wafers. Packaging and integration remain major challenges.

Applications: In consumer electronics, MEMS accelerometers and gyroscopes for smartphones and gaming devices. Automotive safety systems rely on MEMS sensors. In medicine, microfluidic chips for diagnostics, lab-on-a-chip systems, and implantable devices. Telecommunications use micro-optical components. Environmental monitoring, industrial automation, and aerospace also employ mikrotechnical components.

Education and research: Universities and research institutes pursue microfabrication, MEMS design, materials science, microfluidics, and packaging. Industrial players include semiconductor manufacturers, specialized MEMS foundries, and medical device companies.

Future directions: Continued scaling and integration with nano- and biotechnologies, developments in flexible and printable microdevices, energy-efficient sensing, and multi-material 3D microfabrication. The field emphasizes reliability, cost-effectiveness, and system-level integration.
