If a user-space server crashes, it is less likely to bring down the entire system compared to a monolithic kernel where a faulty driver could cause a system-wide failure. However, microkernel architectures often face performance challenges. The overhead of inter-process communication between the microkernel and user-space servers can be higher than direct function calls within a monolithic kernel. This has led to ongoing research and development in optimizing microkernel performance and exploring hybrid approaches that combine aspects of both microkernel and monolithic designs.
