Mikrocytosis

Mikrocytosis is a medical condition characterized by the presence of abnormally small red blood cells (RBCs) in the bloodstream. This condition is often associated with iron deficiency anemia, but it can also be caused by other factors such as certain genetic disorders, chronic diseases, or exposure to toxins. The size of RBCs is typically measured by the mean corpuscular volume (MCV), and an MCV below 80 femtoliters (fL) is considered indicative of microcytosis.

The primary cause of microcytosis in iron deficiency anemia is a decrease in the amount of hemoglobin within the RBCs, leading to a reduction in cell size. In other cases, microcytosis may result from an increased rate of RBC production or a decrease in the rate of RBC destruction. The condition can lead to symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, and shortness of breath, which are common in anemia.

Diagnosis of microcytosis typically involves a complete blood count (CBC) and a reticulocyte count. Treatment for microcytosis depends on the underlying cause. For iron deficiency anemia, oral iron supplements are often prescribed. In cases of genetic disorders or chronic diseases, specific treatments may be required.
