Mycobacteria are typically transmitted through the air, making respiratory infections the most common. Symptoms of mycobacterial infections can range from mild to severe and may include fever, night sweats, weight loss, and respiratory symptoms. Diagnosis often involves culture of the bacteria from clinical specimens, although molecular tests are increasingly used due to their speed and sensitivity.

Treatment of mycobacterial infections typically involves a combination of antibiotics, often including isoniazid, rifampicin, ethambutol, and pyrazinamide. The duration and specific regimen can vary depending on the type of infection and the patient's immune status. Preventive measures include vaccination, such as the Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine for tuberculosis, and infection control practices to prevent the spread of these airborne pathogens.
