Midnattsolen

Midnattsolen, also known as the "midnight sun," is a natural phenomenon that occurs in regions near the Arctic and Antarctic Circles during the summer months. This event takes place when the sun remains continuously above the horizon for 24 hours or more, creating a period of near-constant daylight. The phenomenon is most prominent within the Arctic Circle, particularly in countries like Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, Greenland, Canada, and Russia, as well as in parts of Alaska and Antarctica.

The duration of the midnight sun varies depending on the latitude and time of year. Near the Arctic Circle, it typically lasts for a few weeks around the summer solstice (around June 21), while closer to the poles, such as in Svalbard or northernmost Norway, it can persist for months. For example, in Longyearbyen, Svalbard, the sun does not set from approximately April 23 to August 19. This prolonged daylight can significantly impact daily life, influencing sleep patterns, outdoor activities, and even cultural traditions.

The midnight sun has been a significant part of Arctic cultures for centuries. Indigenous peoples, such as the Sami in Scandinavia and the Inuit in the Arctic regions of Canada and Greenland, have adapted their lifestyles to accommodate the extended daylight. The phenomenon is the opposite of the polar night, where the sun remains below the horizon for 24 hours or more during the winter months in the same regions.
