Midgars

Midgars is a coastal city-state on the western shore of the continent of Valora. It serves as a major commercial and industrial hub, with a centuries-old harbor that connects inland markets with international routes. The name Midgars derives from the local dialect and is commonly interpreted as "the middle yards," a reference to its historic role as a crossing point between different trades and communities.

Midgars originated as a fishing village and market town in the early Middle Ages. It gained urban autonomy in the 14th century after forming a defensive league with neighboring towns, and its shipyards and metal workshops fueled growth in the following centuries. A major fire in the 18th century prompted rebuilding and harbor modernization, shaping the city’s current waterfront character.

Today, the city consists of an elevated old town and a riverfront port district. A network of canals and narrow lanes links residential areas with guild halls, warehouses, and public squares. The central waterfront hosts merchant houses and the City Hall, reflecting a blend of historic and practical architecture.

Midgars' economy centers on shipbuilding, metalworking, and trade services. It houses several large foundries and a vibrant market that handles goods from inland producers and overseas suppliers. The port supports cargo, fishing fleets, and passenger ferries to nearby islands.

The population is diverse, with communities speaking Midgaran and regional languages. The city hosts the Tide Festival each spring, featuring parades, music, street food, and craft fairs. Guilds oversee crafts such as ship carpentry, smithing, and textiles.

Midgars is governed by a Council of Representatives elected from its districts, led by a mayor. The council works with guild delegates to regulate trade, transit, and urban planning, maintaining civic participation and public accountability.
