Middiscourse

In various analyses, middiscourse encompasses transitional devices such as discourse markers, hedges, digressions, reformulations, and clarifications that organize turn-taking, topic maintenance, and stance expression during the middle phase of interaction.

Functions commonly associated with middiscourse include linking subtopics, signaling shifts, asking for confirmation, introducing perspectives, and shaping listener expectations. It acts as a bridge that connects the opening frame to the closing synthesis.

Applications appear across settings, including classroom discourse, political or media rhetoric, online forums, and conversational AI. In computational linguistics, modeling middiscourse can improve the naturalness of generated text by inserting appropriate mid-speech transitions and connectors.
