Micronización

Micronización refers to the process of reducing the particle size of a solid material to the micrometer range, typically between 1 and 1000 micrometers. This is achieved through various mechanical or physical methods. The primary goal of micronization is to increase the surface area of a substance, which can significantly alter its physical and chemical properties.

Common applications of micronization are found in pharmaceuticals, where it enhances drug dissolution rates and bioavailability, leading to more effective medications. The techniques employed for micronization include jet milling, ball milling, and cryomilling. Jet milling uses high-velocity gas streams to cause particle-on-particle collisions, breaking down the material. Ball milling involves grinding the substance with media like ceramic or metal balls in a rotating drum. Cryomilling is performed at cryogenic temperatures, making brittle materials easier to fracture.
