Micelle-containing is a term used to describe formulations or solutions in which micelles are present. Micelles are nanoscale aggregates formed by amphiphilic surfactant molecules in which hydrophobic tails are sequestered in a central core and hydrophilic heads face the surrounding water. They typically form when the surfactant concentration exceeds the critical micelle concentration (CMC), and they can persist in aqueous environments or in certain nonpolar solvents under appropriate conditions.

Micelles can arise from ionic (anionic or cationic), nonionic, or zwitterionic surfactants, and can also form mixed micelles in multi-surfactant systems. In nonpolar media, reverse micelles may form, with polar interiors and nonpolar exteriors. The presence of micelles alters solution properties and enables solubilization of hydrophobic substances within the micellar core, improving dispersion, stability, and delivery in aqueous media. This behavior underlies many practical uses, including detergency, cosmetic formulations, and pharmaceutical solubilization and delivery systems.

Applications of micelle-containing formulations include cleaning products, personal care items, and various drug-delivery or topical formulations. In food science, micellar systems can aid the solubilization of lipophilic ingredients and influence texture or stability in certain products. Characterization of micelle-containing systems typically involves determining the CMC (often via surface tension measurements), assessing aggregate size (e.g., dynamic light scattering), and analyzing molecular environment (spectroscopic techniques). Stability is influenced by concentration relative to the CMC, temperature, ionic strength, and pH, with dilution below the CMC leading to micelle disassembly.
