Metrorail

Metrorail is the rapid transit system serving Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. It is operated by Miami-Dade Transit, a division of the county’s Department of Transportation and Public Works. The system provides high-capacity urban rail service with electric trains on a largely grade-separated right-of-way. Most routes include elevated sections, with some portions at ground level, and the network serves downtown Miami as well as suburban areas across the county. The trains are heavy-rail vehicles designed for frequent, long-term service.

Metrorail is integrated with the county’s other public transit modes, including the Metromover downtown people-mover system and the longer-distance Tri-Rail commuter line operated by a separate agency. Stations are located near major employment centers, residential neighborhoods, and transit hubs, and many offer park-and-ride facilities as well as connections to local bus networks. The system functions as a backbone for regional mobility, linking residential areas with business districts, cultural sites, and educational institutions.

Since its inception, Metrorail has undergone multiple expansions and rolling-stock upgrades to improve capacity, reliability, and safety. Upgrades have included station modernization, signaling improvements, and fleet refurbishments, along with plans to extend service to new corridors and enhance intermodal connections. The ongoing development reflects efforts to adapt to population growth and changing travel patterns in South Florida.
