Methylációja is the Hungarian term for methylation. Methylation is a fundamental biochemical process that occurs in all living organisms. In biology, methylation is a crucial regulatory mechanism. It plays a vital role in numerous cellular processes. One of the most well-known examples is DNA methylation, where a methyl group is added to a cytosine base in DNA. This modification can alter gene expression, influencing whether a gene is turned on or off. This is essential for processes like cell differentiation and development, as well as for maintaining genomic stability.

Beyond DNA, proteins can also be methylated. This post-translational modification can affect protein structure, stability, localization, and interactions with other molecules. Methylation of histones, for instance, is a key aspect of epigenetic regulation, influencing how tightly DNA is wound around these proteins, thereby affecting gene accessibility.
