MeteoSwiss

MeteoSwiss, the Swiss Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology, is the national meteorological service of the Swiss Confederation. It provides weather forecasts, severe weather warnings, and climate data for Switzerland. Its services support public safety, transportation, agriculture, energy, and planning across cantons and national agencies. MeteoSwiss operates under the Federal Department of Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC).

It maintains a comprehensive observational network, including weather stations, radar, and satellite data, and runs numerical weather prediction models to produce short- to medium-range forecasts. Forecasts and warnings are distributed through the MeteoSwiss website, mobile apps, media briefings, and partner channels. The agency also provides specialized meteorological services for aviation, railways, and hydrology.

In climate and environmental monitoring, MeteoSwiss collects long-term climate data, maintains archives, and produces climate assessments for Switzerland. It supports flood forecasting, avalanche risk assessment, and water resource management, contributing to risk mitigation and adaptation efforts in cooperation with national and cantonal authorities.

Internationally, MeteoSwiss is a member of the World Meteorological Organization and participates in European networks such as EUMETNET, sharing data, products, and best practices with partner meteorological services and research institutions.

History: The Swiss national weather service evolved from early state observation networks and has been organized as a federal office within the Swiss government to provide integrated meteorological services.
