Metastelma

Metastelma is a genus of flowering plants in the family Apocynaceae. They are native to the Americas, with a distribution ranging from the southwestern United States to Argentina. The plants are herbaceous perennials or annuals, typically growing up to 2-10 inches in height.

The stems of Metastelma usually have a slight woody texture towards the base, and may be hairy or glabrous. They often branch out into several stems from the base, forming a small, compact clump. Leaves are usually opposite, simple, and ovate in shape, with entire margins and a notched or pointed apex. They are often covered with stiff hairs, and can have a waxy or thick texture.

Mourning privet, a common local name for some species of Metastelma, refers to their tendency to retain the flowers in their wilted state for several days, creating a discolored appearance. They typically produce small, funnel-shaped flowers, often blue, purple, or violet in color. Fruit is a capsule, typically dehiscent, and contains several seeds.

The Metastelma genus is part of the larger tribe Apocynceae. Systematics research has indicated that the genus consists of about 25 species, although some sources may recognize more. Metastelma species are often found in open or exposed areas, including dry meadows, sandy soils, and rocky outcrops. In some areas they have become naturalized after being introduced as an ornamental plant.
