Metasphaeria
Metasphaeria is a genus of fungi that belongs to the phylum Ascomycota. These fungi are typically found in soil and on decaying plant matter. The genus was first described by the mycologist Saccardo in 1883. Species within Metasphaeria are often characterized by their asexual reproductive structures, known as conidiophores, which bear conidia. Sexual reproduction, when it occurs, involves the formation of ascospores within an ascus. The morphology of the fruiting bodies, or ascocarps, can vary among species, but they are often perithecia, which are flask-shaped structures.
The ecological role of Metasphaeria fungi is primarily as decomposers, contributing to the breakdown of organic
