Metalramme

Metalramme is a term used in speculative metallurgy and in some fictional or theoretical contexts to describe a laminated metallic composite comprising alternating layers of metal and reinforcing materials. In its standard conception, metalramme elements are thin metallic sheets interleaved with ceramic, oxide, or carbon-based interlayers, forming a laminate with anisotropic properties. The metal layers provide ductility and electrical conductivity, while the harder interlayers enhance stiffness and damage tolerance.

The resulting composite can exhibit high strength-to-weight ratios and improved fracture toughness relative to single-metal substrates. Manufacturing approaches include roll bonding, multilayer deposition, diffusion bonding, and rapid solidification followed by lamination. A key challenge is achieving strong, durable bonding between layers and controlling residual stresses that can drive delamination under load.

Applications are proposed in aerospace structures, protective armor, high-performance automotive components, and sporting equipment, where light weight, strength, and impact resistance are valued. In fictional or speculative contexts, metalramme is sometimes depicted as having tailorable thermal expansion and electromagnetic characteristics achieved by selecting layer materials and thicknesses.
