Metallöverdraget

Metallöverdraget, or metal coating, refers to the application of a thin layer of metal onto the surface of another material. This process is employed for a variety of reasons, including enhancing corrosion resistance, improving electrical conductivity, increasing hardness, or for aesthetic purposes. The base material can be a metal, plastic, ceramic, or even textiles.

There are several common methods for applying metal coatings. Electroplating is a widely used technique where an electric current is passed through an electrolyte solution containing metal ions, causing the metal to deposit onto the workpiece. Another method is hot-dip coating, where the substrate is immersed in a bath of molten metal, such as zinc for galvanizing steel. Physical vapor deposition (PVD) and chemical vapor deposition (CVD) are vacuum-based techniques that involve the transfer of material at a molecular level, often used for high-performance applications. Thermal spraying, including flame spraying and plasma spraying, involves melting metal particles and propelling them onto the substrate.

The choice of coating metal and application method depends heavily on the intended use of the coated object and the properties desired. For instance, zinc coatings are popular for protecting steel from rust, while gold or silver coatings are often used for decorative purposes or to enhance conductivity in electronics. The thickness and uniformity of the metal coating are critical factors in determining its performance and durability.
