Metallporter

Metallporter are a group of proteins that facilitate the transport of metal ions across biological membranes. Metallporter proteins are classified into two main families: the heavy metal ATPase (HMA) family and the zinc transporter (ZIP) family.

These proteins use ATP (adenosine triphosphate) to drive the transport of metal ions against their concentration gradient. The ZIP family, on the other hand, transports zinc and cadmium, but not copper. ZIP proteins do not require ATP for transport and instead use a proton gradient to drive the movement of metal ions.

In humans, they are involved in essential functions such as zinc absorption in the intestine, copper transport in the liver, and cadmium detoxification in the kidney.
