Metallocene compounds are organometallic compounds featuring a central metal atom sandwiched between two parallel cyclopentadienyl rings. The general formula for a metallocene is (C5H5)2M, where M represents a metal atom. The cyclopentadienyl ligand (Cp) is an aromatic anion with a delocalized pi electron system, allowing it to coordinate to the metal center in various modes, most commonly in an eta-5 (η5) fashion where all five carbon atoms of the ring are bonded to the metal. The bonding between the metal and the Cp rings is often described as covalent with significant ionic character.

The first metallocene discovered was ferrocene, bis(cyclopentadienyl)iron, in 1951. This discovery was groundbreaking and led to extensive research into other metallocenes. Subsequent discoveries revealed that a wide range of transition metals, as well as some main group elements, can form metallocene complexes. The properties of metallocenes vary greatly depending on the identity of the metal and its oxidation state, as well as the nature of any additional ligands present.

Metallocenes have found significant applications, particularly in catalysis. For instance, metallocene-based Ziegler-Natta catalysts are crucial for the polymerization of olefins like ethylene and propylene, producing polyolefins with tailored properties such as isotacticity and molecular weight. Other applications include their use as precursors for chemical vapor deposition, in medicinal chemistry, and as components in molecular electronics. Research continues to explore new metallocene structures and their potential uses.
