Metallisuojaa is a Finnish term that translates to "metal protection" or "metal shielding." It broadly refers to any material or treatment applied to a metal surface to prevent or mitigate degradation. This degradation can manifest in various forms, including corrosion, abrasion, chemical attack, or wear. The primary goal of metallisuojaa is to extend the lifespan and maintain the functional integrity of metal components and structures.

There are numerous types of metallisuojaa, each tailored to specific environments and types of metal. Common methods include coatings such as paints, lacquers, enamels, and powder coatings. These form a physical barrier between the metal and the surrounding environment. Electroplating, where a thin layer of another metal like zinc, chromium, or nickel is deposited onto the surface, is another prevalent technique. Galvanization, a specific form of zinc coating, is widely used for its sacrificial corrosion protection properties.

Other forms of metallisuojaa involve chemical treatments. Passivation, for instance, creates a protective oxide layer on metals like stainless steel.
