Metallipinnoitteiden, known in English as metal plating or metallic coatings, refers to the application of a thin layer of metal onto the surface of another material, typically a metal, plastic, or ceramic. This process serves various purposes, including enhancing the aesthetic appeal of an object, improving its corrosion resistance, increasing its hardness, or providing electrical conductivity.

Several methods exist for applying metallic coatings. Electroplating is a common technique where an electric current is passed through an electrolyte solution containing ions of the plating metal. The object to be plated acts as the cathode, and the plating metal as the anode, causing the metal ions to deposit onto the surface. Another method is electroless plating, which uses a chemical reaction to deposit the metal without an external electric current. Other techniques include physical vapor deposition (PVD) and chemical vapor deposition (CVD), which involve depositing metal atoms or molecules from a vapor phase onto the substrate.

The choice of metal and coating method depends on the desired properties and the substrate material. Common plating metals include gold, silver, nickel, chromium, copper, and zinc. These coatings find widespread applications in industries such as automotive, electronics, jewelry, aerospace, and manufacturing, protecting components from wear and environmental damage, and improving their overall performance and lifespan. The thickness of the coating can be precisely controlled to meet specific functional requirements.
