Metalliliitosmenetelmät, or metal joining methods, refer to the various techniques used to permanently or semi-permanently connect two or more pieces of metal. These methods are fundamental in manufacturing, construction, and repair across numerous industries. The choice of joining method depends on factors such as the types of metals being joined, the required strength of the joint, the operating environment, and economic considerations.

Common metal joining methods can be broadly categorized. Fusion welding processes, such as arc welding (including TIG, MIG/MAG, and stick welding) and gas welding, melt the base metals and often a filler material to create a metallurgical bond. Resistance welding, like spot welding and seam welding, uses electrical resistance to generate heat at the interface of the metals, causing them to fuse. Brazing and soldering are also fusion-based but involve melting a filler metal with a lower melting point than the base metals, creating a joint without melting the base materials themselves.

Mechanical fastening methods offer an alternative to fusion. Riveting involves using a mechanical fastener, a rivet, to join parts by deforming the rivet to create a permanent connection. Bolting and screwing employ threaded fasteners to create detachable or semi-permanent joints. Crimping and seaming are used for sheet metal, where edges are folded or overlapped and secured.

Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages regarding joint strength, appearance, cost, and applicability to different metal types and thicknesses. Proper selection and execution of these methods are critical for ensuring the integrity and performance of the final product.
