MetallDrehbänke, commonly known as metal lathes, are fundamental machine tools used in metalworking for shaping and finishing metal parts. Their primary function is to rotate a workpiece against a cutting tool, allowing for precise material removal. This process is known as turning.

The core components of a metal lathe include the bed, which provides a stable base; the headstock, housing the spindle that rotates the workpiece; and the tailstock, which can support longer workpieces or hold tools. A carriage assembly moves along the bed, allowing for longitudinal (feed) and transverse (cross) movement of the cutting tool. Control wheels or levers operate these movements.

Metal lathes are capable of performing a variety of operations, including facing (creating a flat surface perpendicular to the axis of rotation), turning (reducing the diameter of the workpiece), threading (creating helical grooves), and boring (enlarging an existing hole). They are essential for producing cylindrical parts, such as shafts, bolts, and fittings, with high accuracy and surface finish.
