Metal halide lamps are known for their high luminous efficacy, meaning they produce a lot of light for the amount of energy they consume. They also have a long lifespan compared to incandescent bulbs. However, they require a ballast to regulate the current and voltage for proper operation.

These lamps are commonly used in applications where bright, efficient, and good quality light is needed. Examples include street lighting, stadium lighting, floodlights, and indoor lighting for large spaces like warehouses and gymnasiums. They are also used in horticulture for plant growth and in some specialized applications for stage and studio lighting. They typically require a warm-up period to reach full brightness.
