Mestarisylinteri is a Finnish term that translates to "master cylinder" in English, commonly encountered in the context of hydraulic systems, particularly in automotive braking systems. A master cylinder is the central component that converts mechanical force into hydraulic pressure. When a driver presses the brake pedal, it actuates a piston within the master cylinder. This piston, in turn, pushes brake fluid through the brake lines.

The master cylinder typically contains one or two pistons and reservoirs for brake fluid. In dual-circuit systems, common in modern vehicles for safety, two separate pistons operate independently or semi-independently, each controlling a portion of the braking system. This design ensures that if one circuit fails, the other can still provide some braking power.
