Messapians
The Messapians were an ancient Indo-European people who inhabited the Salento peninsula, the southeasternmost part of Italy, in classical antiquity. They were one of the Iapygian tribes, alongside the Peucetii and Calabri. The Messapian language, though poorly attested, is believed to be an Indo-European language, possibly related to Illyrian. Their territory was bordered by the Adriatic Sea to the east and the Ionian Sea to the west.
