Merwede

Merwede is a river in the Netherlands, formed by the confluence of the Maas and Waal rivers, though its exact formation and definition are subject to historical and geographical interpretation. It flows through the province of South Holland and is an important part of the Dutch delta. The river is characterized by its meandering course and its role in the country's complex system of waterways.

Historically, the Merwede's course and name have been associated with different river branches and periods. It is often considered a continuation of the Waal, one of the main branches of the Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt delta. The river's name is derived from the former fortified town of Merwede. The Merwede plays a significant role in Dutch water management, serving as a shipping route and contributing to the landscape of the Biesbosch national park, a large freshwater tidal wetland.

The river eventually splits into the Old Merwede and the New Merwede. The Old Merwede flows past Dordrecht and joins the Oude Maas, while the New Merwede continues towards the Hollands Diep. These divisions highlight the dynamic nature of the Dutch delta, where rivers constantly reshape the land and their own courses.
