Merkmalskategorien, also known as feature categories or characteristic categories, are a fundamental concept in data analysis and machine learning. They represent a way to group and classify the different types of features or attributes that describe a given dataset. Understanding these categories helps in choosing appropriate methods for data preprocessing, model selection, and interpretation of results.

The most common distinction is between categorical and numerical features. Categorical features represent distinct groups or labels, such as colors (red, blue, green) or types of animals (dog, cat, bird). These can be further subdivided into nominal features, where there is no inherent order (e.g., countries), and ordinal features, where there is a meaningful order (e.g., education levels: high school, bachelor's, master's).

Numerical features, on the other hand, represent quantities that can be measured. These are typically divided into discrete numerical features, which can only take on a finite or countably infinite number of values (e.g., number of bedrooms in a house), and continuous numerical features, which can take on any value within a given range (e.g., height or temperature).

Beyond this primary division, other merkmalskategorien might be relevant depending on the domain. For instance, temporal features relate to time, and text features involve unstructured textual data.
