Merisuolassas

Merisuolassas is a Finnish term that translates to "sea salt grass." It refers to a group of halophytic plants found in coastal environments, particularly in brackish or saltwater marshes, estuaries, and salt flats. These plants are adapted to tolerate high salinity levels in the soil and water, which would be detrimental to most other terrestrial vegetation.

The specific species commonly referred to as merisuolassas can vary depending on the region and exact habitat, but often include grasses from genera such as Puccinellia, Spartina, and sometimes even certain species of Carex or Juncus that exhibit halophytic adaptations. These plants play a crucial role in coastal ecosystems, helping to stabilize shorelines, prevent erosion, and provide habitat and food for various invertebrates and birds. Their dense root systems anchor the soil, while their foliage offers protection and nourishment.

Merisuolassas communities are sensitive to changes in sea level, water quality, and human disturbance. Their presence is an indicator of a healthy coastal zone. In Finland, these plants are typically found along the Baltic Sea coast, where the salinity is lower than in oceanic environments, but still sufficient to select for salt-tolerant species.
