Membrantätigkeit refers to the various functions and processes that occur at or within biological membranes. These membranes, primarily composed of a phospholipid bilayer, are essential for cellular life, acting as selectively permeable barriers that control the passage of substances into and out of cells and organelles.

Key aspects of membrantätigkeit include transport processes. This encompasses passive transport, such as diffusion and facilitated diffusion, where substances move across the membrane down their concentration gradient without requiring cellular energy. Osmosis, the diffusion of water across a semipermeable membrane, is another crucial passive transport mechanism. Active transport, conversely, requires cellular energy, usually in the form of ATP, to move substances against their concentration gradient. This includes carrier proteins and pumps that actively move ions and molecules.
