Membraanivõrgustik

Membraanivõrgustik is a Finnish term that translates to "membrane network" or "membrane mesh." It refers to a complex, interconnected structure of biological membranes within a cell. These membranes are not isolated entities but rather form a dynamic and continuous system that encloses various organelles and compartments.

The endomembrane system is a prime example of a membrane network. It includes the nuclear envelope, endoplasmic reticulum (both rough and smooth), Golgi apparatus, lysosomes, vacuoles, and the plasma membrane. These organelles communicate and cooperate through vesicular transport, where small membrane-bound sacs bud off from one organelle and fuse with another, transferring proteins, lipids, and other molecules.

This intricate membrane network plays crucial roles in cellular functions such as protein synthesis and modification, lipid metabolism, detoxification, and transport of materials within and out of the cell. The continuous nature and interconnections allow for efficient processing and distribution of cellular components, ensuring the proper functioning of the cell. Disruptions to the membrane network can lead to various cellular dysfunctions and diseases.
