There are several types of membrane filtration, each with its own specific applications and characteristics. Microfiltration (MF) is used to remove particles and microorganisms from liquids, with pore sizes typically ranging from 0.1 to 10 micrometers. Ultrafiltration (UF) is employed to separate larger molecules, such as proteins and viruses, with pore sizes usually between 1 and 100 nanometers. Nanofiltration (NF) is used to remove ions and small molecules, with pore sizes around 1 to 10 nanometers. Reverse osmosis (RO) is a specialized form of NF that uses pressure to force water molecules through the membrane, leaving dissolved salts and other impurities behind.

Membrane filtration offers several advantages, including high separation efficiency, low energy consumption, and the ability to handle a wide range of feed concentrations. However, it also has some limitations, such as membrane fouling, which occurs when particles or solutes accumulate on the membrane surface, reducing its permeability and efficiency. Regular cleaning and maintenance are essential to mitigate this issue and ensure the long-term performance of membrane filtration systems.
