Meimurje

Meimurje is a geographical and historical region located in northern Croatia, specifically in the northwesternmost part of the country. It is bordered by Slovenia to the west and north, and by Hungary to the east. The Mura River forms a significant portion of its eastern and northern boundary, from which the region derives its name. The Drava River also flows through the region, defining its southern limits before merging with the Danube.

The administrative center of Meimurje is Čakovec. The region is known for its fertile plains, which are well-suited for agriculture, with vineyards and orchards being particularly common. Historically, Meimurje has been a crossroads of cultures, influenced by its neighboring Slavic, Germanic, and Hungarian populations. This has resulted in a unique cultural identity, reflected in its traditions, cuisine, and dialect.

Historically, Meimurje was part of the Kingdom of Hungary for centuries, and later part of the Habsburg Monarchy. It became part of Croatia within the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes (later Yugoslavia) after World War I. The region experienced significant development in the 20th century, with improvements in infrastructure and industry. Today, Meimurje is a prominent part of the Republic of Croatia, attracting visitors with its natural beauty, agricultural products, and historical sites.
