akovec

Akovec is a small settlement located in the Municipality of Šenčur in the Upper Carniola region of Slovenia. The village covers an area of approximately 1.15 square kilometres and, according to the 2002 census, had a population of 92 residents. It lies at an elevation of 452 metres above sea level, situated on the western slope of the Zgornje Gorje hills, just north of the main road leading to Log pri Brezovici.

The earliest documented mention of Akovec dates to the early 13th century, where it appears in a 1233 royal charter as "Akoveč". The name is believed to derive from a Slavic personal name, possibly indicating the original lord or founder of the settlement. Over the centuries the village remained largely agrarian, with residents engaged in small-scale farming, orchard cultivation, and livestock rearing. During the period of Austro‑Hungarian rule, Akovec was part of the Gorizia and Gradisca administrative division.

Today, the economy of Akovec is still dominated by agriculture, though many inhabitants commute to nearby towns such as Šenčur and Kranj for employment. The settlement features a small chapel‑in‑the‑woods that dates back to the 18th century, and the surrounding landscape is part of the Žirovski Vrh nature reserve, known for its mixed beech–pine forest and diverse bird species. Annual local festivals celebrate traditional Upper Carniolan customs, including folk music, dance, and regional cuisine. Akovec remains a quiet and picturesque example of rural life in Slovenia’s picturesque highlands.
