Meibomschen

Meibomschen glands, also known as tarsal glands, are small, modified sebaceous glands located in the eyelids. They are responsible for producing a lipid-rich substance called meibum, which is essential for maintaining the health and function of the tear film. The tear film is a thin layer of fluid that covers the surface of the eye, providing lubrication, protection, and nourishment to the eye's surface.

Meibomschen glands are situated in the tarsal plates, which are the fleshy parts of the eyelids. They are connected to the eyelashes through tiny ducts. The meibum produced by these glands helps to spread the tears evenly across the eye's surface, preventing them from evaporating too quickly. This is particularly important in dry eye conditions, where the tear film may be insufficient or unstable.

The meibum also plays a role in protecting the eye from environmental irritants and infections. It forms a barrier that helps to prevent foreign particles from entering the eye and can also help to neutralize any irritants that do make contact with the eye.

Meibomschen gland dysfunction (MGD) is a condition characterized by the obstruction or dysfunction of the meibomian glands, leading to an insufficient production of meibum. This can result in symptoms such as sticky or crusted eyelids, eye irritation, and dryness. MGD can be caused by a variety of factors, including aging, hormonal changes, and certain medical conditions. Treatment options for MGD may include warm compresses, eyelid hygiene, and, in some cases, surgical intervention.
