Meghajlított

Meghajlított is a Hungarian adjective meaning “submissive,” “subjugated,” or “bowed.” The word comes from the verb meghajlítani, which literally translates as “to bend back” or “to bow.” In figurative use the term describes a person or group that has yielded to authority or dominance, or a state of being subjected or dominated.

In literature and journalism the term often appears in political or social contexts, for example describing a society that has fallen under the influence of an external power or an individual who has capitulated to pressures. It can also be used in personal relationships or workplace settings to denote a subordinate or compliant attitude. The construction is typically an adjective used predicatively or attributively: “a meghajlított nép” (a subjugated people) or “a meghajlított állapot” (a submissive state).

Synonyms include alávetett (subdued), rezett (demoralized), and engedő (yielding), though každá has slightly different nuances. The root verb is still in use: meghajlítani (to bow), with the perfect participle meghajlított forming the adjective.

Because it reflects a state of loss of autonomy, its usage can carry negative connotations. It is frequently examined in discussions of power dynamics, colonization, and authoritarian regimes within Hungarian scholarship and media.
