These megawatt-scale facilities are envisioned as being capable of supplying the power needs of entire cities, regions, or even nations from a single, massive installation.

The idea behind megawateista is rooted in the potential for economies of scale. Proponents suggest that concentrating power generation into fewer, larger plants could lead to greater efficiency and lower per-unit energy costs. This could involve various energy sources, including traditional fossil fuels, nuclear power, or large-scale renewable energy projects like vast solar farms or offshore wind farms. The term often carries an implication of centralized control and a top-down approach to energy planning.

However, the concept also faces significant criticism. Critics of megawateista point to potential vulnerabilities associated with such large-scale, centralized systems, such as the impact of a single plant failure.
