Megaloblasty
Megaloblasty refers to an abnormality in the maturation of red blood cell precursors in the bone marrow, specifically characterized by the presence of megaloblasts. These are unusually large nucleated red blood cells with a nuclear-cytoplasmic asynchrony, meaning the nucleus matures more slowly than the cytoplasm. This results in a distinctive appearance under a microscope.
The primary cause of megaloblasty is impaired DNA synthesis, most commonly due to deficiencies in vitamin B12
