Medullaret is a term used in some theoretical discussions to describe a proposed neural network within the medulla oblongata that would coordinate autonomic regulation and visceral reflexes. It is not recognized as a discrete anatomical structure in standard neuroanatomy. Instead, medullaret is used to refer to a functional network that could emerge from the interaction of distributed medullary circuits involved in autonomic control.

The etymology combines medulla, from the brainstem region, with a suffix suggesting a net or reticular organization. The term has appeared mainly in speculative reviews or discussions aimed at explaining coordinated rhythmic autonomic outputs rather than as a defined anatomical entity. Its usage reflects ongoing interest in how disparate medullary components might act together to regulate bodily states.

Proposed anatomy and function of medullaret are deliberately broad. In some accounts, it is described as involving dispersed neurons across regions such as the nucleus of the solitary tract, the rostral ventrolateral medulla, and adjacent reticular formations. The hypothesized role includes shaping heart rate, vascular tone, respiratory drive, and reflex adjustments to blood gas and pH, potentially through synchronized activity patterns that integrate sensory input with descending modulation.

Evidence for a distinct medullaret is limited. The concept remains controversial and is considered speculative by many neuroanatomists. Proponents argue that it could explain certain emergent properties of brainstem autonomic control, while critics contend that known medullary networks already account for observed rhythms without invoking a separate medullaret.

If validated, medullaret could influence interpretations of autonomic dysfunction, sleep-related breathing disorders, and brainstem injury. Ongoing research would need targeted electrophysiological and imaging approaches to test whether such a functional network exists.
