Medimurje

Medimurje is a geographical and historical region in the northwestern part of Croatia. It is situated in the country's range of the Gorjanci and Medvednica mountain ranges, bordering the country of Austria to the north and Slovenia to the northwest. The region's diverse landscape encompasses hills, mountains, and the broader regions of the Drava and Mura rivers. It covers a total area of about 730 square kilometers between the Drava, Mura, and Kupa rivers.

The history of Medimurje is deeply intertwined with the region's predominantly Croatian inhabitants. Historically, Medimurje was part of the parish of Lavamund within the Duchy of Carinthia and the Habsburg Monarchy. After World War I, the region's inhabitants supported their incorporation into the newly formed State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs. However, the region remained part of the newly created nation, The Kingdom Yugoslavia after the Paris Peace Conference, as part of the Banovina of Croatia. At the end of World War II, the area was again part of Croatia, within the Socialist Republic of Croatia.

The majority of the region is agricultural, with a significant amount of the area dedicated to arable land and livestock. The economy of the region is also driven by industry, including various agricultural-based industries, including food processing. The administrative center of Medimurje is the city of Cakovec.
