Medikamentvirkning refers to the observable and measurable effect produced by a drug in a living organism. It includes therapeutic benefits as well as adverse or unintended responses. The term encompasses both how the drug produces its effect (pharmacodynamics) and how the body processes the drug (pharmacokinetics).

Pharmacodynamics describes the mechanisms by which a medikament exerts its effects. Common mechanisms involve interactions with receptors (agonists, antagonists, partial agonists), enzyme inhibition, or modulation of ion channels and signaling pathways. Dose–response relationships illustrate how increasing dose can enhance effect up to a maximum (efficacy), while potency describes the dose required to achieve a given effect. The therapeutic window is the range between beneficial and harmful effects.

Pharmacokinetics covers absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion. These processes determine onset, intensity, and duration of medikamentvirkning. Factors such as route of administration, bioavailability, organ function, and genetic differences influence these properties. For example, hepatic metabolism can generate active or inactive metabolites, while renal clearance affects elimination.
