Mediacritical is an adjective used to describe approaches, analyses, or stances that critically examine media texts, institutions, and infrastructures. It emphasizes how media production and distribution influence knowledge, power, and culture, and it seeks to uncover biases, frames, and assumptions embedded in content as well as in the politics of media systems themselves.

Practitioners employ mediacritical methods across textual analysis, industry studies, and audience research. Textual analysis examines messaging, representation, genre conventions, and rhetorical strategies. Industry studies explore ownership, funding, labor, advertising, and the economics of platforms. A central focus is the role of algorithms, recommendation systems, data practices, and moderation in shaping information exposure. The approach often draws on critical theory from cultural studies, feminist and postcolonial perspectives, and political economy.

Applications include media literacy education that fosters skeptical reading of sources and framing; journalism that contextualizes reporting within broader media ecosystems; and scholarly work analyzing media influence in politics, public opinion, and social movements.

Debates around mediacritical work address issues of interpretation, objectivity, and potential biases; the balance between critical analysis and constructive dialogue; and challenges posed by new technologies such as AI-generated content and platform-driven news ecosystems. Some critics caution against overgeneralization or cynicism, while supporters argue that mediacritical methods are essential for understanding the power dynamics of contemporary media.
